The best fantasy football prize is one the rest of the league has to look at every Saturday. A payout disappears into a checking account by Tuesday. A grill or a cooler shows up at the next tailgate with the champion standing next to it, and it keeps showing up all season. That's the argument for gear over a gift card, and it gets better if the prize stays with the league.
Set it at the draft, buy it from the pot
Name the prize the night of the draft, so everyone knows what they're playing for and nobody argues about it in Week 15. Take it out of the league dues, so the winner gets the prize and not a gift card and a shrug. Then decide one thing: does the champion keep it, or does it pass down next year like a trophy? A cooler that changes hands every January, with the old champions' names on a strip of tape under the lid, is worth more to a league than anything you could buy for it.
Order it before championship week so it's there for the handoff, and by Dec. 8 if it's riding in with Christmas.
One pick per pot
- A small pot, about $150: the Tailgate Trekker, our 20-liter backpack cooler. Eighteen cans with ice and both hands free on the walk from the far lot, and unlike a stitched soft cooler, its seams are welded, so the meltwater stays in the cooler instead of running down the champion's back. It's the one we carry to games.
- About $170: the Revo Dubler Party Cooler, made in the USA, per Revo. Twenty-four cans on ice on one side, and on the other a half-size pan of wings or sliders, with condiment trays and a clear lid, so the drinks and the food sit on one table instead of two coolers.
- About $200, the one to pass down: the Revo Dubler HEAT. Microwave the two heat packs, drop in two pans hot from the oven, and Revo says the food stays warm for up to 5 hours with no flame, fuel or outlet, which is a chafing dish no big-box cooler can be. In September it goes back to holding 24 cans on ice.
- The whole pot, about $350: the HEAT plus the Trekker. The HEAT carries two pans of hot food from the kitchen to the lot, the Trekker carries the drinks on the champion's back, and one person can bring the whole spread in one trip.
The last-place punishment is a job, not a purchase: last place hosts and cooks the first tailgate of next season, from setup to cleanup, for the whole league. It's the only punishment that ends with everyone fed. Point them to how much food to make, and to the five dishes that survive a lot.
Then hand over the prize, and let the cooler carry the names.
