Anyone can wander through Grange Grove on a game Saturday, past the reserved plots, food trucks, live music and the pregame radio shows. The student paper's 2024 guide calls it "an essential experience for all college students." About two hours before kickoff, the Illini Walk comes through the Grove's tailgates with the Marching Illini drumline behind it. When fireworks go off inside the stadium, 60 and then 25 minutes before kickoff, it's time to pack up and head in.

The lot answer

Illinois tailgates in two places: Grange Grove, the grass commons on the west side of the stadium, with no cars allowed, and the pass lots, 31 to 39 and 42 to 49, around the stadium and the State Farm Center. Single-game parking is the Research Park lots and the Vet Med lot, sold online, with DIA shuttles to the stadium.

Can't miss

  1. Papa Del's The Champaign pizza argument starts and ends at the deep-dish place that's fed Illini crowds since 1970.
  2. The Three-in-One In the pregame show, the Marching Illini play their signature piece, and it's the one moment the whole stadium stops to watch the band.

Quick answers

What time do the Illinois lots open?

7 a.m. on game day. Only RVs can park the night before, in Lot 33 from 6 p.m., and nobody can save spots or set up in the lots before 7. Grange Grove also opens at 7 a.m., whatever the kickoff time.

Can you grill at Illinois tailgates?

Illinois bans open-flame fires in the lots and in Grange Grove, and its parking page lists non-confined fires as prohibited. It doesn't post a separate grill rule, so keep any cooking contained and check with lot staff, who can restrict any tailgate item for safety.

Can you drink at Illinois tailgates?

Illinois Athletics doesn't post a lot alcohol rule. Selling or handing out food or drinks is banned, and so is commercial activity of any kind. Full-service Grove packages can include catering with alcohol.

Do you need a ticket to tailgate at Illinois?

Lots need a parking pass for every car, and Lot 31 allows no walk-ups at all. Grange Grove takes reserved spots, booked through REVELxp by the Tuesday of game week, and a Grove spot doesn't include parking.

How do you buy parking at Illinois?

Lots near the stadium are season pass lots. Single-game parking is at Research Park and the Vet Med lot, bought online, with shuttles to the stadium. RVs and motor homes use Lot 33, and pull-behind trailers go in Lots 47 and 49.

The rules

Rules last verified Oct 14, 2026 against fightingillini.com.

One parking pass, one space. Tailgate in front of or behind your car, inside your marked space, with the aisle clear.
Grills
Allowed, charcoal included. Keep the fire in the grill, attended, and 25 feet from people, buildings and tents. No ground fires, and take cold coals off campus.
Grove tents
10 x 10 or smaller. No rope, tape or cones to mark a spot, and no tailgating on walkways.
Not allowed
Saving spaces, selling food or drinks, personal golf carts, scooters, drones, fireworks and big inflatables.
Smoking
Not allowed in Grange Grove.
Staff calls
Lot staff can restrict any tailgate item, including tents, for weather or safety, and can pull misused passes.
When it ends
Grange Grove closes at 10 p.m., or an hour after games that end later.

One clear bag: a 12 x 6 x 12 inch tote, a 12 x 12 inch drawstring or a 1-gallon bag, plus a clutch about 4.5 x 7 inches.

Where the party is

Grange Grove is the front porch here: a grass tailgate commons on the west side of the stadium, no cars allowed, with the Illini Walk coming through it. The pass lots around the State Farm Center handle the car-side crowd.

The main event

Grange Grove

Reserved spots only, booked through REVELxp. Open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., or an hour after a late game, with a Kids Zone 3 hours before kickoff. No vehicles, no electricity, no tents over 10 x 10.

The moment

The Illini Walk

About 2 hours 20 minutes before kickoff, with the drumline 10 minutes ahead of it.

The car-side crowd

The State Farm Center lots

Pass lots 32 to 39 ring the State Farm Center just south of the stadium.

Getting out

Every lot has its own route in, and Kirby Ave stays closed by the stadium. Your options, best first:

  1. Stay in the Grove. It's open until 10 p.m., or an hour after a late game. Let the lots clear first.
  2. Ride the shuttle back. DIA shuttles serve Lots 46, 47 and 49, Vet Med and Research Park.
  3. Meet your rideshare at the State Farm Center. Pickups use the circle drives, reached from First St or Fourth St.
  4. Skip this

Pull out at the final whistle. Along with every car on the same route.
