Moonshine and pepperoni rolls are what Mountaineer fans are known for, and the code in Morgantown's lots is "If I have food, you have food." That's how a WVU fan blogger who tailgates in the Gold lot with her husband puts it, and the blog says he shows up at 6:30 a.m. whatever the kickoff, with filet kabobs over wild rice that he starts marinating the Thursday before. On first downs the stadium raises its hands and hums "Oooo" until the call, then pumps three times to "W-V-U."

The lot answer

WVU's big tailgate lot is the Blue Lot, a long curve of season-permit spaces in front of Ruby Memorial Hospital, with the North Lawn and Almost Heaven Village between it and the stadium. Single-game parking is the Gold lots, card only, and RVs without a season spot use the Black RV Lot at the Coliseum, first come.

Can't miss

  1. Country Roads after a win The team and the whole stadium sing "Take Me Home, Country Roads" together. Don't leave early on a good day.
  2. The Mantrip Before every home game, the team walks to the stadium through a line of fans, named for the cars that carry coal miners into the mine.
  3. Pepperoni rolls West Virginia's own snack, bread baked around sticks of pepperoni. Every gas station in town sells them.

Quick answers

What time do the WVU lots open?

7 a.m. for Saturday games, unless WVU notes otherwise for a lot. RV lots open the Friday before, starting at 8 a.m. in parts of the Blue Lot and the Coliseum Lot. Cars left in permit lots before 7 a.m. on game day get towed.

Can you grill at WVU tailgates?

WVU's A-Z guide says open fires are prohibited, but its 2026 game-day pages don't post a separate grill rule. Check your lot's signs and permit terms. There's no tailgating at all in the Green Garage.

Can you drink at WVU tailgates?

Kegs and excessive drinking aren't allowed in or around the stadium, and drinking games are banned. Alcohol can't go into the stadium or come out of it. Beer sales inside are controlled, and you follow state law in the lots.

Do you need a ticket to tailgate at WVU?

WVU doesn't post a ticket rule for the lots. Season lots take a color-coded permit, and canopies need a permit for that lot. Almost Heaven Village is free and open to all fans, and everyone needs a ticket for the game.

How do you buy parking at WVU?

Most stadium lots are season permits through the Mountaineer Athletic Club. Single-game parking is in the Gold lots and the Green Garage, the Black RV Lot is first come on the day, and all game-day parking is card only.

Where the party is

The Blue Lot is the big one: a long curve of season-permit spaces in front of Ruby Memorial Hospital, with the North Lawn and Almost Heaven Village between it and the stadium.

The main lot

The Blue Lot

Season permits, right in front of the hospital and steps from the North Lawn. Parts of it open to RVs at 8 a.m. Friday.

The open door

Almost Heaven Village

Free on the North Lawn next to the Blue Lot, from 3.5 hours before kickoff: food trucks, inflatables and the spirit squads.

The moment

The Mountaineer Mantrip

The team gets dropped at Don Nehlen Drive and Med Center Drive about 2 hours 45 minutes before kickoff and walks up to the northeast gate.

What to eat

Open fires are out, and WVU doesn't post a separate grill rule, so check your lot before you cook. Almost Heaven Village has food trucks before every home game.

Getting out

WVU turns Don Nehlen Drive outbound after the game. Your options, best first:

  1. Ride the PRT. It's free on game days and runs until an hour after the game.
  2. Take the MountainLine bus. Stadium buses run back to Mountaineer Mall for at least an hour after the game.
  3. Drive out Don Nehlen Drive. Both lanes carry stadium traffic out, and nobody can turn in from Route 705.
  4. Skip this

Park on Don Nehlen Drive for a quick exit. It's no-parking after the game.

First time here?

  • Lots open at 7 a.m. for Saturday games. Don't leave a car in a permit lot before then.
  • Canopies: 10 x 10 feet max, after 7 a.m., with a permit for that lot.
  • No open fires, no kegs, no drinking games.
  • Up to 20 people per spot.
  • Line Don Nehlen Drive for the Mantrip, about 2 hours 45 minutes out.
  • Clear bag only, and no re-entry.

Visiting? How to join a tailgate

Almost Heaven Village on the North Lawn is free and open to all fans, and it sits right next to the Blue Lot. Start there, bring something to share, and wait for a wave before you join a setup.
