Tailgating at Stanford Stadium

In 2018 a former Stanford player was building each tailgate menu around the opponent: "Trojan horse ribs" for USC, duck four ways for Oregon. Another regular in that year's Punch Magazine profile had driven down from Redwood City for 15 years to hold a shady spot in Lot 10's groves, with a 34-foot RV, a big-screen TV and fresh-cut roses on the table. Fan Fest by Angell Field is free from three hours before kickoff, and the band winds past it on the way in. Caltrain makes game-day stops at the stadium, and locals ride bikes in with clear bags hung on the handlebars.

The lot answer

Stanford's tailgate lots are set among the groves and lawns around the stadium, and the shade is the prize: Lot 2 at El Camino Grove takes overnight pass holders from 3 p.m. two days before the game. Without a pass, the general lots sit north of the stadium off Galvez St and Arboretum Rd. New for 2026, groups can reserve a tailgate space by the stadium through Stanford Athletics.

  1. The Stanford Band It doesn't march. It scatters across the field in whatever it's wearing that week, and the halftime show is part satire.

Quick answers

What time do the Stanford lots open?

5 hours before kickoff. Lot 2, El Camino Grove, opens at 6 a.m. on game day, and Lot 2 overnight pass holders can enter from 3 p.m. on the Thursday before a Saturday game, or the Wednesday before a Friday game.

Can you grill at Stanford tailgates?

Stanford's 2026 game-day pages don't post a grill rule for the football lots. Check your lot's signs and your pass terms before you light anything.

Can you drink at Stanford tailgates?

Stanford doesn't post a lot alcohol rule. Outside alcohol can't come into the stadium, and fans who appear impaired aren't let in. Inside, beer, wine and canned cocktails are sold with ID until the end of the third quarter.

Do you need a ticket to tailgate at Stanford?

Stanford doesn't post a ticket rule for the lots, but every car needs a pass for its lot or an on-site purchase at Lots 4, 7 or 8. Fan Fest is free. The stadium takes a ticket for everyone over 24 months old.

How do you buy parking at Stanford?

Buy a pass for your lot ahead of time through Stanford Athletics, or pay on site at General Lots 7 and 8 or IM South Lot 4. Day-of parking is card only, no cash.

Arrive early. Stanford recommends it to avoid delays getting in.

Where the party is

Stanford sells its tailgate on shade: lots set among groves and lawns around the stadium, from El Camino Grove to Toyon Grove, with Lot 2 regulars allowed in two days early.

The early birds

Lot 2, El Camino Grove

The only lot that opens at 6 a.m. on game day, and overnight passes get in from 3 p.m. two days out.

The drive-up

General Lots 7 and 8

North of the stadium, and with IM South Lot 4 the only lots that sell parking on site. Bring a card.

The family stop

Fan Fest

Free, in the Hammer Throw area between Cobb Track and Nelson Road, across from Gate 3. Food, drinks, games and live entertainment from 3 hours before kickoff.

Getting out

Stanford posts traffic-flow maps by lot. Your options, best first:

  1. Walk to Caltrain. The Palo Alto station is a short walk from the stadium.
  2. Take a Waymo from the Oval. The game-day pick-up zone is at the Oval. Order through the Waymo app.
  3. Stay in your lot a while. Re-entry ends after the third quarter, but your lot doesn't. Let the roads clear.
  4. Skip this

Leave with every other car at the final whistle. Bring patience.
