What it is

Twenty-four cans on your back, both hands free for the walk from the lot. We'll say it plainly: our own Trekker is the pick for most people walking in from a far lot, and the Backcountry is here for the crew that wants a bigger box and Cordova's hard-cell insulation for a long, hot day.

Cordova rates it at 24 cans and doesn't say how much ice fits with them; the Trekker's 18 is counted with ice, so once the ice goes in, the gap is likely smaller than six cans. It weighs 4 pounds empty, and Cordova says the main zipper is watertight and the build leakproof, so the melt stays in the cooler instead of running down your back. Two inches of hard-cell insulation sit inside an 840D nylon shell. Padded shoulder straps, a chest strap and a mesh back panel carry it, and zip pockets on top and front hold keys and a phone. It's about the size of a school backpack, 12 × 8 × 18 inches, in four colors.

Backcountry or our Trekker? The Trekker is $20 less, and the opener and koozie come free. Get the Backcountry for the bigger box and the thicker insulation.

Why we picked it

Both hands free, and the zipper keeps the melt inside.

Cordova fits 24 cans into a backpack that weighs 4 pounds empty. Padded shoulder straps, a chest strap and a mesh back panel carry it across a long parking lot.

Cordova says the main zipper is watertight and the build is leakproof, so melt stays in the cooler instead of running down your back or across the truck seat.

Two inches of hard-cell insulation keep it cold all day, per Cordova. Top and front zip pockets hold keys and a phone, and there are grab handles all around.

How it works in the lot

Pack it. Strap it. Walk.

  1. Pack it cold.

Cans in first, ice over the top. The main compartment is 9.5 by 5.75 by 14.5 inches inside.

  2. Zip it and strap in.

Close the watertight zipper and clip the chest strap so the load rides steady.

  3. Drop it at the tailgate.

Set it down, unzip the top and the cans are right there.

What's in the box

The Backcountry Class backpack cooler.

How many cans fit in this 24 can backpack cooler?

24 cans, per Cordova. It doesn't say whether that's with ice, so pack a few fewer if you want room for loose ice. Inside it's 9.5 by 5.75 by 14.5 inches.

Will it leak in the truck?

Cordova says no: the main zipper is watertight and the build is leakproof. Keep the zipper clean and lubricated, per Cordova's zipper care guide, so it keeps sealing.

How big is it on your back?

12 inches wide, 8 deep and 18 tall outside, and 4 pounds empty. The shoulder straps are padded, there's a chest strap, and the back panel is mesh.

Care

Wipe it clean and let it dry open. Keep the zipper clean and lubricated, per Cordova's zipper care guide.

  • 5 out of 5 stars. Great backpack cooler

We went camping 4th of July weekend and it was hot. The cooler kept the drinks nice and cold. My only problem is I bought the 24 pack lol Not my first item from Cordova. The quality and the customer service is what keeps me coming back.

  • 5 out of 5 stars. Great backpack

We use it for Saturdays on the boat and it fits our needs well for a family of three. Our drink stay ice cold and our sandwiches and fruit sit on top of the drinks and ice and stay cool til lunchtime. Being a backpack it frees up my hands to carry other items down the dock and saves me a trip back to the truck.

  • 5 out of 5 stars. Great quality at a much

Great quality at a much better price than some other big names. I also love that it is made in the US!

  • 4 out of 5 stars. Keep it Cool

Only going 4 stars since I have not had the cooler long enough enough. It does seem well built and the short trips that I have used it on the cooler has done well. We shall see how the durability is over time.
