What it is

If the walk is short and the ground is sand, you don't need a motor, just wheels that don't sink. Luxel's beach wagon is the sand pick in the lineup, the pull-it-yourself option with 9-inch balloon tires that roll over sand, grass and gravel where little wagon wheels dig in.

Luxel rates it at 300 pounds, more than either electric wagon, so the cooler, the chairs and the grill go in one trip. Drop the back panel and the basket stretches to 260 liters, about 275 quarts per Luxel's figure, room for a canopy bag lengthwise. It folds to about 30 × 17.5 × 11 inches, so it rides in a trunk next to the cooler. An air pump comes in the box for the tires.

Beach wagon or electric? Most people: the Luxel CEC-2BR, motorized for pavement, gravel and grass, with a table at the spot. Get this one for sand, or a short walk you'd rather pull. For a long haul with the heaviest loads, sand included, the Luxel 500W.

Why we picked it

Big soft tires for the walk from the far lot.

The 9-inch balloon tires hold air and have deep tread, so they ride over sand, grass and gravel instead of digging in. Luxel includes a pump to soften them for sand.

Luxel rates it at 300 pounds on a steel frame with cross supports. The front wheels swivel all the way around, so it turns tight between parked trucks.

Drop the tailgate panel for long gear: Luxel says 200 liters, 260 with it open. It folds in seconds into its own bag, and it has two built-in cup holders.

How it works in the lot

Air it. Load it. Fold it.

  1. Air up the tires.

Use the included pump: softer for sand, firmer for gravel, per Luxel.

  2. Load it and pull.

Up to 300 pounds, per Luxel. The front wheels swivel for tight turns.

  3. Fold it and bag it.

It folds to about 30 by 17.5 by 11 inches and goes in its carry bag.

What's in the box

The wagon, A carry bag, An air pump and Two cup holders.

Will a folding wagon with big wheels roll on sand?

That's what these 9-inch balloon tires are for. Luxel says to run them softer on sand, and that how it goes depends on the load and the sand.

Do the tires need air?

Yes, they're pneumatic. A hand pump comes in the box, and Luxel says to adjust the pressure for the ground you're on.

How big is it folded?

About 30 by 17.5 by 11 inches, per Luxel's size chart, and 24 pounds. It goes in the included carry bag.

Care

Follow Luxel's manual for cleaning and drying, and check the tire pressure before each trip.
